Vintage Sewing Box
Sewing Question?
I just got a killer deal at a garage sale, i snagged
two full boxes of vintage patterns for like 4 bucks!
Problem though i am MUCH smaller than
these patterns provide. I am new
at sewing so im probably not ready to
do this yet but i still wanted to ask.
I am a size 2/4 ( yes i know tiny )
and many of the patters allow
for size 10 at the smallest.
is there anyway to modify these
so i can wear them : (

First of all, you may not need to alter them at all. Clothing sizes have changed drastically in the last 30 years. If they are old enough, the sizes will be around 3 sizes off of current sizes, so the 10’s would probably be about a 6 in today’s garment industry. They will have measurements on the envelope for each size, compare those to your own measurements.
If you still need to take them down, depending on the style it can be very simple or very easy. If you need to take two inches out of the waist, for instance, and there is a skirt front and skirt back, you simply take one inch out of each piece. If it is a jacket with darts, set in sleeves, and several pieces, altering it becomes much more difficult. If you want to experiement, cut the patterns out of a cheap fabric, muslin is usually used, first to try the fit, make any necessary adjustments, then cut out of the fabric you want to use.
