Variegated Thread
How do I get pale pink and lilac to show on a digital photograph?
I’m trying to take a digital photo of a cushion/pillow cover I recently finished embroidering in a lovely variegated pale pink and lilac thread, but the colour just doesn’t show up on the picture at all! I’ve tried it at all manner of angles and in various types of light, with and without flash. Maybe there’s something I’m missing? Can you suggest something that might work? I keep photos of all the things I’ve made as my only record as the vast majority are given away and I would like to have an accurate record of this piece too.
Thanks, I’ll try some of those, (once I’ve worked out how to do it as my camera knowledge is pretty basic), but I do know that editing colours on the PC doesn’t work – it just increases red etc in the whole photo and then the contrast between the white fabric and the coloured thread is equally poor.=(
First thing to check is your color space. Many digital cameras come with a sRGB color space, that means that the camera is set up to show colors that are used for the internet.
The sRGB color space is not appropriate for pictures, It is small and doesn’t have a lot of colors in it. Go into the different menu’s of the camera and see if you can change the color space to Adobe RGB. Adobe RGB is bigger, and can give you a lot more colors.
Another thing to consider is the color temperature of your monitor, it should be 6500 kelvin (K), mess around with the controls, if you can’t find it, then you may need to profile your monitor, but that is a big deal and it’s really more for professional photographers. Setting it up to 6500 K is important though.
Check other parameters of your camera too, things like vivid saturation and the like, mess with it until you get it right.
If your making prints of the pictures, try taking some of the digital pictures to a professional store and see if they do a better job, a lot of home printers need to be profiled too and that is quite hard.
