Sew Quilt Fabric
why cant i get my sewing machine to feed the fabric? i have to pull my fabric through and its not sewing right?
i have used to sew a lot a few years ago and i made like 20 pairs of pajama pants so i am no stranger to a machine, but for some reason i can not get the fabric to move under the pressure foot like it should. i am sewing a quilt and trying to sew my little patches and i am not getting anywhere. any advice would be great!!
You’ve got the feed dogs dropped, or the presser foot pressure is set too lightly, or you’ve got one heck of a thread jam going on, possibly caused by slightly misthreading the machine, bad thread, or a machine in need of cleaning — I’m assuming you’ve already set the stitch length to something longer than 0.
To figure this out and fix what you can, take the thread out of/off of the machine. Clean the machine as directed in your manual, making sure you take the needle plate off and vacuum and brush thoroughly around the bobbin case/shuttle area. Don’t use compressed air — you don’t want to blow lint farther in, where it’s harder to get rid of. If the manual says it needs oil, oil the specified spots, using only sewing machine oil. 3 in 1 type oils eventually thicken, freezing the machine, and WD-40 products are solvents, not lubricants, and evaporate, freezing the machine.
Next, place a piece of paper under the presser foot, drop the presser foot, set the machine for a long, straight stitch, and sew with unthreaded needle. If the paper moves, it’s probably a dirty machine or a misthreading causing problems. If it doesn’t move, check the manual for how to drop the feed dogs for free motion embroidery or quilting, and do the opposite. Typically it’s a switch down low on the front of the machine, usually right in front of the bobbin case area. If it still doesn’t move, pull on the paper. If it tears before you can begin to get it out from under the presser foot, the presser foot pressure is too high… try adjusting to something midrange, if it can be adjusted. If you have no problem pulling the paper out, the presser foot has too little pressure. Readjust.
