Part of the fun of a celebration is decorating. What would Christmas be without the twinkling lights and colorful garlands? You can take this same idea of decorating and adapt it to any other holiday you want. Cinco de Mayo is perfect for decorating. It lets you try some unique crafts specific to Mexico.

The Art of Cutting Paper

Papel picado is the art of cutting paper. Tissue paper is used to create beautiful lattice designs that can then be hung on the walls, in the windows or used as table runners. Get the kids involved so they can have fun making these colorful decorations. They can then be hung on strings and draped around the room.

Pick out some colorful tissue paper sheets, some pinking shears or craft scissors, fancy hole punches, an iron, string and glue. You can use red, green and white, since they are the colors of the Mexican flag, or you can pick out some pretty tropical colors. Once you have gathered all your materials, fold a single sheet of tissue in half on the short side. Fold it into quarters, and then into eighths. This project is very similar to making paper snowflakes.

How to Fold the Paper

Unfold the paper and refold it along the same folds the opposite way to flatten the paper. You can use an iron set on a low temperature to flatten the paper so it is easier to cut. When using the iron, make sure you do not have water in it for steaming.

Use the scissors to cut along the bottom of the tissue. When it is unfolded, it will create a pattern. Choose a hole punch and make repetitive patterns all over the rest of the paper, trying to keep it orderly. Don’t punch over folds or your hole punch will jam up.

When the holes are done, slowly unfold the tissue, taking care it does not tear. Lay it flat on the ironing board and use a warm iron to flatten out the creases. Isn’t it pretty? Make a bunch of these, and have fun with the patterns. They do not all have to be the same.

Displaying Your Handy Work

Cut a length of string so you can hang them up as banners. Make it long enough to glue several tissues in a row. Fold the top of the tissue over by about half an inch. Place the string in this fold and glue the edges of the paper down. Mix up the colors in your banner strings so you get the full effect of color. Let them dry thoroughly before you hang them up. Drape them along the walls, over windows and around tables.

You can use single sheets as placemats on the table. Place them on the table under everyone’s plates or to set off the platters of easy Mexican recipes that you made for the celebration. This craft is lots of fun and is easy enough for almost anyone to do. Even small children can help with supervision.
