Stitch Presser Foot
HELP! with my sewing machine, the top thread bunches underneath the fabric! if anyone can help, PLEASE answer!
okay, so i have a singer prelude model number 50t8 (thats what it says on the sticker) and when i try to start sewing, the top thread bunches up underneath into a huge ball, and its only the first few stitches
then, the top thread gets stuck, and the machine ate a hole through a piece of the fabric
and sometimes the top thread breaks
BUT the top of the sewing looks fine
and ive already oiled the machine, dusted it out and rethread it a bazilion times, both the top and the bobbin
and im pretty sure it has to do wiht the tension, but can someone please tell me if i need to tighten or loosen it, and which tension should i fix?
because i am on the verge of murdering my machine, cause it messed up some good fabric im using to make a skirt with
and i changed the needle too
aaaand the presser foot is always down
and it just recently started this
oh yea, one more thing, im sewiing with a jersyish material

1) You need to thread the top of the machine with the presser foot UP. This allows the thread to enter the top tension. Normal tension setting would be 4-5. You can lower the presser foot to give yourself room to thread the needle more easily, but it needs to be up when threading the top.
2) Wads of thread on the bottom of the seam indicate an issue with the top tension being too loose, or if the wads are at the beginning of a seam, with not holding the ends of both threads before starting to sew a seam.
Dig out the manual, unthread the machine, taking all the thread off (top and bottom). give it an oiling and cleaning per the manual, rethread, and sew some scrap fabric, remembering to hang onto the thread ends at the beginning of the seam.
Two other points to check: is there a wrap or two of thread under the spool, around the spool pin? That’s a common result of a broken top thread and can increase the top tension to the point the thread breaks and backlashes again. Is there a felt or plastic “doily” under the spool if the spool is on a vertical spool pin? That helps control how the spool turns on the spool pin.
And one last thing: lightweight jerseys and similar limp fabrics often need a stabilizer under the fabric to keep it from being poked down the hole in the needleplate. Tissue paper or adding machine paper or “official” stabilizer can be used for this purpose.
