Smocking Elastic Thread

smocking elastic thread
Sewing machine DILEMA !!?

I am sewing a dress with a “mock smock” effect, with the elastic thread.. my machine used to work perfect for it.

i just oiled my machine, and cleaned it, in hopes it would help, but im still having the same problem..

the tensions are fine, on the bobbin and the top thread, but the top thread seems to keep snagging on something as its joining on the underside with the bobbin

it is not bunching !

the thread just seems to snag every 5/10 stitches or so, and i have to tug the fabric to keep it moving along, but then the top thread is almost broken on the underside (it is now joined with the elastic bobbin thread at this point)

if i do not pull the fabric along, it just stays in the same spot, gathering the unsewn fabric into it..

i NEED it to stop snagging ! does anyone know what is causing this ??

Try turning the spool (on top) over in the spool holder — often there’s a nick or sharp spot on the spool end the thread snags on. Also check the bobbin is smoothly wound — something that’s a bit hard to do when winding by hand. And try a new needle that is correct for the fabric being sewn.

If that doesn’t do it, try feeling along the thread path with a piece of fine silk or pantyhose nylon stretched over a fingertip — it’s a good way to find snaggly spots that need polishing out with crocus cloth. Still haven’t found it? Keep going… presser foot (especially inner surfaces), needleplate, feed dogs, bobbin case, bobbin, sewing hook.

Still snaggling? Try paper or other stabilizer under the fabric.
