What’s the best sewing machine?

I’m a beginner, but i plan to pick up sewing. I want to learn, so that i can make & design theatre/halloween costumes with this machine. What do you think is a good intro to mid level sewing machine that can handle this sort of abuse? is singer still the best?

Nope, new Singers are not the best, not any more. An old one, sure. Your best bet for quality, reliability and ease of operation is a used machine in your price range. Trust me, if you’re a beginner, you’ll have enough to learn without dealing with a bunch of fancy features. Get a basic model with zigzag, and get the owner’s manual for it and read it. After you get your hand in and know what you’re doing, then you’ll know enough to know what you need and want when you upgrade to a fancier machine, or maybe you’ll realize you don’t need all the bells and whistles. Go to a place that sells and services sewing machines and see what they have. Don’t let the age of a machine scare you off. The good ones last a long long time. I have a Kenmore 30 years old that has never given any trouble through sewing acres of curtains as well as other sewing, a portable Singer 50 years old that sews beautifully, and a 60 year old Pfaff that sews like a dream even through 8 layers of denim. Older used machines are cheap. I’ve bought ones in perfect running condition at thrift stores for $50 but if you’re a newbie then buy from a place that guarantees the machine is working properly.
