can a spool of silk single strand embroidery thread for machine be used effectively to do hand embroidery?
It can, but because of the way machine embroidery thread is spun it’s quite the exercise in frustration. Machine threads twist spin, and tangle on themselves if you don’t follow a few preliminary steps. First, reel off the amount of thread you need. If you need more than one strand then ensure that all strands come off the spool the same direction and they are all threaded in the needle in the same direction. This mean no doubling back like you do when you use two strands of ordinary thread. The twist should all run in the same direction.
Next, press the thread with a warm iron so it’s not in little circles, the way it comes off the spool. Pressing between two sheets of wax paper will coat the thread and make it easier to use.
While sewing, let the needle drop and let the thread un-twist. or take off the needle and let the thread relax and untwist.
for a single strand you’ll want to lightly press any curls or loops from the thread and every once in a while let the thread untwist while working. Silk won’t need waxing, since it’s already smooth and slippery. Don’t pull stitches too tight, silk can cut through some fabric if it’s pulled tight.
So in conclusion, your silk thread should work fine.
