Sewing With Elastic Thread

Can I sew with elastic thread on a home sewing machine?

I want to make a specific item and it seems to me like I should use elastic thread. Is that possible to use in a good old home sewing machine?

What is it that you’re trying to sew? Can we help you figure a good way to do it if shirring (below) isn’t what you were thinking of?
