How difficult is it to make clothing from patterns?

I would like to get into sewing and making my own clothes from patterns and fabric. How difficult is that to do, and what kind of tools and equipment would I need? Is it even worth it, considering the cost of the equipment and materials versus buying ready-made clothing at the store?

When making clothing from patterns, you always want to start simple. A basic sleeveless top or pencil skirt. Not a formal gown or men’s sportcoat.

You will definitely need at least scissors, pins, sewing machine, measuring tape, and marking chalk.
Depending on the amenities of your sewing machine, to start would probably cost around 350-500$.

As far as wondering if it would be worth it, it just depends on the situation. Some things you make will cost more than their ready-made counter parts for one simple reason. The retail store where you are buying your garment paid a wholesale price for it. When you buy fabric, zippers, buttons, you are not getting the same wholesale deal. You are getting retail mark up.

At the same time, you can alter the design as you see fit. If you dont want to spend 30$ a yard for silk fabric and would be happier with a light cotton for 5$ a yard, DO IT. You might not want those crystal buttons. So you just have to choose your projects wisely and think over the price diffrerences.
