Sewing Threads Types
Looking for suggestions on kind/type of thread to use in sewing swim suits.?
Am sewing a swimsuit and need suggestion for what type of thread to use. Figure an all-cotton is not the best choice. Is all-polyester the best option? Or ?
Plain ol’ all purpose polyester is a good choice. If you’re sewing with a non-stretch stitch, you might consider using the polyester version of “wooly nylon” in the bobbin — called “Polyarn”, from Superior Threads.
If this is a suit that’s going to be worn in chlorinated or brominated water, you need to make sure you’re using chlorine resistant fabric (not all nylon-lycras are!) and chlorine resistant elastic. Otherwise, one day you dive in and come back out wearing the towel someone tossed you.
A really good book for beginners sewing swimming suits, unitards and similar garments is Kwik Sew’s Swim and Action Wear. It’s a combination of a basic maillot pattern to alter into other patterns, very explicity instructions on materials, notions and fabrics, and how to sew and serge the garments. There’s also a little bit on sewing swimming suits in Connie Long’s book on knits, which is more likely to be on the public library shelf.
