Sewing Thread Strength

Easy way to repair a small hole in a shirt?
My hubby cut a V-shaped hole in his shirt on accident, as it was laying under the area he was using a box knife. Oops! Is there an easy way I can patch this up without it looking corny? Luckily the hole is on the back lower part of the shirt. I don’t have a sewing machine but I was thinking of just finding matching thread and sewing it up by hand. Should I use some kind of patch underneath for strength? Any tips would be great, I haven’t had much experience with mending clothes but this is one of his fav shirts.
Oh, it is a long-sleeve thicker shirt, almost like a sweater but not quite. Thanks!
Fabric stores sell iron-on tape and patches for repairing tears.
Apply according to the directions on the package and to the back side of the shirt.
For added safety, dab the outside of the tear with Fray-Check after the patch has cooled.
