Sewing Clothes Books
what is a good sewing machine for beginners and a sewing book too.?
i want make my own clothes. i want to study fashion design but its too much for me so im just going to learn on my own. so any suggestions for good sewing machine and a book too? i saw this brothers computerized project runaway with 50 stitches machine, is that any good? thanks

FWIW, the kids I work with who have Janomes seem to have fewer problems with the machine than those with Singers and Brothers. But each person is different, and I highly urge you to go try some machines out at dealers.
Books: My first suggestion is to look for a sewing class. There’s enough to learn at the beginning that most folks seem to have an easier time of it if you’ve got a teacher there in person to check your pattern layout, to help you learn to cut correctly, to correct your Vulcan death grip when sewing a seam, etc. You’ll learn some basic machine handling techniques when shopping for your sewing machine, but you can reduce your frustration level with a few lessons. Look for lessons at sewing machine dealers, fabric stores, adult/community education classes, community colleges, and if you’re young enough, 4-H.
If you can’t find a sewing class, then head to the library or bookstore and start looking at the various sewing books on the market. Some of the prettiest ones are not the most helpful, imo. The one I prefer, Crawford’s Guide to Fashion Sewing, is a first term design school sewing book, copiously illustrated with line drawings, and takes you step by step through all the basic garment types, and through the rest of the basics like zippers, placket closures, buttonhole types, etc. There’s a new edition just out, so I’m seeing a bunch of the previous edition for cheap on abe.com — this might be a good opportunity. The sewing world is divided into the home sewing methods category and the manufacturing methods category. Most sewing books use home sewing methods, which I mostly find to be inefficient. The classic sewing reference for home methods is probably Reader’s Digest Complete Guide to Sewing, any edition. Name changes slightly over the years. Simplicity’s Simply the Best Sewing Book and the Dorling Kindersley sewing book are good beginner books in the home sewing category, but you really ought to look around and see what makes sense to you.

Some patterns will not sew together correctly — they weren’t properly designed to begin with. Of the commercial companies, I prefer to start beginners with patterns from KwikSew (http://www.kwiksew.com ) Burda and Crawford’s patterns for Butterick. Since she comes from the production pattern making side of things, those patterns are checked and double checked to make sure they’re correct. Most patterns aren’t.
