Sewing Cloth Diapers Fabric

Do I need a serger?
I have a sewing machine that my grandmother bought in 1989 and never used. It was a great machine back then (cost $100) and a decent machine now. I want to sew clothes for my daughter (3 months) and cloth diapers, and every site I go to gives instructions for how to do this on a serger. My sewing machine does not function as a serger. Do I need a serger, or can I just add a little more fabric to the edge and create my own seam? Is there a reason I would need a serger vs. my own sewing machine? (I cannot afford a serger right now and really would like to be able to use the machine I have.) Thanks!
I am using just some basic All in One cloth diaper patterns I found and a onesie pattern.
A serger would be nice for the garment and diapers, only because it reduces bulk from the seams…..but you certainly do not need one to make these items……..I must admit that sergers are expecially great for sewing knits though……..Remember to change your needle to accomadate the knit fabric if that is what you are using on the onsies…….Hope you have sewmuchfun with your projects……I am making each of my 3 of grandaughters a wardrobe of dresses for this spring/summer….I love to sew……..
Made a couple new cloth diapers…..
