Here’s a second vote for Don McCunn’s excellent book. It combines the best parts of drafting and the best parts of draping so you end up with a basic block pattern that is uniquely you. From a basic pattern you can make tops, dresses, jackets, skirts, anything and everything can be yours with a little imagination and a bit of experimenting. It’s the book That was the standard book used to teach custom dressmakers back when dressmaking and dress design was a college level course. It was my first pattern making book and one I still use to this day.
And here’s a vote against “it is out there for free on the Internet” There’s lots of very bad information and plenty of wrong information that’s out there for free. You tube is filled with videos showing you the wrong way to make patterns. Free instruction and user generated content sites are laden with mistake filled instructions sets. Much of the free information is worth what you pay and written by people who have little to no business writing pattern making instructions. You have no way yo check the qualifications of people on the Internet and pattern making is really something that needs to be learned from someone who is trained and experienced. Once you’ve mastered the basics then books such as Winifred Aldrich’s metric pattern cutting series will help you to build a library of basic block patterns which can be turned into whatever fashion garment you wish to make from jeans to evening dresses.
Do be willing to experiment with patterns and try things that aren’t in the boooks, even pros like me experiment with patterns and test our creations in muslin fabric before we make them up in fashion fabric. I fail sometimes -not as often as I succeed -but the trial and experimenting with pattern design is the fun part of fashion design for me.
