What size should I cut the fabric to sew onto this bag?
I’m sewing a square piece of fabric onto a messenger bag. I’ve never really sewn anything before…should I cut the fabric a little larger than what I need, then sew it on and cut off extra, or cut exactly the amount I need and sew that on? I’m just wondering if it will be too difficult to cut off any excess fabric and make it look neat, as the fabric will cover the entire front of the bag.
I also wouldn’t mind any tips from anyone who’s good at this kind of thing!
Cut it a little larger than what you’ll need, but not because you’ll trim it after sewing. In order for the square to look neat when finished is because you should fold the edges over before sewing (kind of like hemming it). Cutting it to size after sewing won’t work. You won’t be able to trim it evenly and the edges will also start to fray and unravel over time. Stop sewing once you get about an inch away from each corner, and fold over the next edge, then continue to sew around the corner. If you sew too close to the corner, you won’t be able to fold over the next side properly. So, say you want the finished square to be 8 inches, cut the square 10 inches so that you can fold over an inch on all four sides.
