Is most fabric generally this expensive?
my elective is fashion design and we had to go out and buy fabric for the purses we were gonna make soon. so i went to joannes and i bought fabric, some thread, some interfacing, and a metal clasp and the total came out to $30! i could have just bought a bag from a store with $30 rather than make one ;-;
it just seems sorta expensive in my opinion. i got 1 yard of this fleecey/cottony fabric which was $6 a yard. and then 1 yard of this hot pink satin fabric for $10 a yard. i didnt have a chance to look at the plain cotton fabric since we were running low on time but i think it was only like $3… oh well D:
my question is, does fabric normally cost this much?
Yes.

And, fwiw, I just bought some $65/yard handwoven tweed for a jacket for myself. That’s more than I usually spend, but I’ve worked with fabrics of up to $250/yard retail. I expect a blazer of that quality, similar to the one I’ll make, would have been priced at about $1500 retail.
Sewing will not save you money if you’re comparing what you can make with fabrics purchased at retail with a garment or purse bought at a lower priced retailer. Sewing does save you money (once you learn enough to do a good job sewing) over a custom item.
The main benefits to sewing, however, are that you learn to understand and recognize well constructed sewn items, you have an outlet for creativity, the item is custom (and fits, if it’s a garment), and you can have what you want, when you want it, whether it’s in fashion or out at the moment.
You cannot compete on price with a $5 t-shirt or sweats from Walmart. You can, however, upgrade the fabric quality and make a custom t-shirt that fits and flatters for $25 — and have it look as good or better than a boutique t-shirt priced at $100. And the shirt you sew, if you’ve chosen the fabric well, will look good for years longer than the $5 t-shirt.
