Bamboo, a sustainable and renewable crop, is now being spun into fabric for eco-conscious consumers.
What are the environmental pros and cons of bamboo fabric? How itchy and rough are bamboo textiles?
Bamboo material gets high marks from some environmental writers.
The London Mail extols bamboo fabric, hailing it as absorbent, soft, durable, and lightweight (Apr. 27, 2008).
Bamboo fabric feels soft to the touch, more like silk or cashmere than cotton, raves E/The Environmental Magazine (Dec. 2008).
Ideal uses for bamboo cloth are summer and active wear. This is because the material sheds microbes and odors, as well as being breathable, argues Elaine Gaston of Knight-Ridder Business News (Jan. 21, 2007, p. 1).
What does it take to transform a tough plant used for hardwood floors and furniture into a soft, silky cloth?
Bamboo is a plant marauder with invasive roots that kill off other species on its land. This explains why it can be grown without chemicals: Bamboo is tough. Bamboo’s hardy root system may be used to stabilize land from erosion. Farmers don’t even have to replant this crop. Bamboo manages this all by itself.
This compares favorably with the heavy doses of chemicals required by cotton production.
Evaluating the environmental effects of processing bamboo fiber into fabric is a different story.
E Magazine notes that harsh chemicals are necessary for hydrolysis-alkalization and bleaching bamboo stalks to make yarn. E concludes, however, that these manufacturing processes are less harmful than making cotton, nylon, or polyester fabric.
As well, there is a greener way to fabricate bamboo yarn. First, bamboo stalks are mechanically crushed.
Enzymes, naturally occurring substances, do the next step. The cells are are reduced to a wet mess that is spun into yarn, reports McKinney (Sherbrooke News, Oct. 15, 2007, p. 11).
The verdict: Bamboo is an environmentally friendly crop, but we have to look at labels vigilantly to be sure bamboo fabric is organic.
