Nylon Threaded Rod
this question is about electric charge and electric field?
an uncharged metal sphere hangs from a nylon thread. when a positively charged glass rod is brought close to the metal sphere, the sphere is drawn toward the rod. but, if the sphere touches the rod, it suddenly flies away from the rod.
why the sphere is first attracted and then repelled?
At first the free electrons in the metal move toward the rod creating an electric field extending out of the sphere, negative toward the rod, positive away. When the rod touches the sphere electrons move to the rod, giving the entire sphere an overall positive charge, like charges repel and the sphere is pushed away from the rod.
