Help finding needlepoint patterns.?

Ok so, I don’t know how to needlepoint, but I think I’d like to learn. I ride/show horses and I’d love to make my own needlepoint equestrian belt but I can’t find any tutorials or anything that explains what you need to do. I know I could just go find a book somewhere (which I prob would end up doing lol) But is there any resources online that would give me the basics of needlepoint? For making needlepoint belts? I’ve looked but I couldn’t find anything. I could only find needlepoint crafts to buy. Anyone know where I could find how to make needlepoint belts/needlepoint basics/supplies?

The book I learned the most from as a beginner was Jo Ippolito Christensen’s The Needlepoint Book, which now has a second edition.
The first stitch I recommend you learn is the basketweave stitch — it’s easy and it keeps the canvas from distorting as badly as half cross or continental stitch.

You’ll need some needlepoint canvas (I’d start with either plastic canvas or interlock for your first project), some yarn of the right size to fill the holes in the canvas, and blunt-pointed needles of the right size for the yarn — they’re called “tapestry needles” and the bigger the number, the smaller the needle. (These are the same needles used for cross-stitch.)

I think you can still get squares of plastic canvas and the yarn and needles of the right size pretty easily in Walmart or hobby stores — and the squares make good coasters, and the stitches are so big they’re easy to pick out if you make a mistake. No blocking is needed when you’re done, either.

When you’re ready to move on to wool yarns (traditional) and fabric canvas, I’d suggest about a #10 interlock for your first project. Make it something smallish, as uneven tension on your stitches will pull it out of shape. When you can make a glasses case or a luggage tag that blocks to a nice rectangular shape, then you’re ready to do whatever you want!

As far as belts, you’re going to want to back your belt with something fairly sturdy — I’d probably use upholstery grade UltraSuede.
