Is it a necessity to have a port while doing chemo?
How big of a deal is it to have a port when a person in reality is only doing chemo once every 3 weeks? The person doesn’t care about needles, nor getting jabbed.
This is dealing with breast cancer type of cancer and the chemo being used is:
Carboplatin, Taxotere, and Herceptin
Pamela…I agree with you up to one point. My port never worked in the first place because it had a slit where there shouldn’t have been one and I needed the thing removed…To make matters worse I had an allergic reaction to the opsite bandage that was used. My chest is one big red scar that is now healing thanks to the port that never was used and $150+ out in co-pays because of the thing. Thanks for the info about Herceptin though.
I didn’t have a port.
I was on a 4 weekly cycle, with 3 days treatment each cycle.
Day 1, Carboplaten & etoposide, Day 2 & 3 just etoposide.
I only had 1 day that was a real problem. A couple of times they had to try twice but on my 3rd cycle, day 2, it took 10 tries for them to get into a vein, having tried my good arm and both feet. I was struggling to cope as was my friend who had come with me, the nurses and the Dr who they had to call.
Day 3, the nurses didn’t even try to find a vein, just called the Dr (same one) and he got a vein first try.
That was the only time there was a real problem in 18 days of chemotherapy.
They wanted to insert a port but I refused, I was well between treatments and didn’t want the reminder, and I developed a reaction to every type of tape they tried, so the port would have needed to be bandaged with non adhesive bandages and would not have been waterproof!
