Music Band Patch
X-Fi Xtreme Music Midi/USB playback into PA System?
Howdy. I bought a usb/midi keyboard (ill be using usb) to use with my band. I just use it to play weird sounds,etc. in a live setting. If I want to patch my computer into my PA system (so I can be HEARD, haha) how would I do this with a X-fi Xtreme Music pci card? Would I do this:
1) plug usb/midi into comp
2)plug instrument cable (w/ attached 1/4″ to 1/8″ adaptor) into line/out of X-fi card
3) plug other end of instrument cable into PA System’s mixer
????
Wanna make sure that would be ok. I know it would work…but is there a better alternative? Or do i need a “buffer” or something? I dont want to fry/break anything on my computer.
I will be using programs like Native-Instruments stand alone soft-synths (e.g. Absynth, Pro53, Massive)
Sounds good…when you say line/out, just to make sure, make sure that’s NOT the headphones line-out (which has worse quality that standard line-out).
THE ONLY REASON YOU’D NEED A BUFFER IS TO DO SOUND PROCESSING/DSP WITH YOUR OWN SOFTWARE (IE NOT USING ONBOARD SOUND-CARD FEATURES)…A PROGRAM “LIVE-FX” THAT IS PART OF THE FREELY DOWNLOAD-ABLE BASS SOFTWARE LIBRARY ON UN4SEEN.COM DOES THIS.
When you say you plug in (USB/MIDI)…just make sure the recording input for USB MIDI is enabled and set to full level (otherwise you’ll hear no sound or quiet sound from your keyboard).
The other trick is use sndvol32.exe (windows sound volume) and make sure the “wave” volume level on the sndvol32 mixer on your PC is not at full volume….any distortion problems you have most likely some from this volume level.

btw, concerning your soft-synths…….they should simply play through the “wave out” on your PC’s mixer (sndvol32.exe) and come out the line-out on your PC. This works with synths like Spectrasonics Atmosphere no problem.
