Instructions For Sewing A Zipper

How can I make a pencil skirt?
I’m only a beginner and would love to make a waist high pencil skirt. I purchased very stretchy fabric that I would like to use. I have only a very simple idea of how to make one (excluding zippers, etc because the fabric is super stretchy) but I don’t know how to sew the seams. Do you cut out 2 panels; one for the front and one for the back, and then just sew them together, so you have 2 seamlines on either side? I’d also like to add a waistband using the same fabric but I’m not sure how to sew it on. If anybody has any suggestions, links to tutorials or any simple instructions on how to make a waist high pencil skirt, it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks ![]()
Also, since I’m using a stretch fabric, would I use a stretch stitch or a stitch such as a zig zag? I really don’t want my threads breaking on me when I stretch the fabric.
See how much give is in the fabric. Do this by holding a four inch amount against the cutting board or ruler, fold that fabric over and stretch. If it moves out to five inches, it has 25% give, and so on. If you like your skirt tight, don’t include ease. Measure your hips, add seam allowances. If you are making a casing, you will add 3 inches at the top. That will give you room for the fold over, seam finishing, and stitching. You would use 3/4″ elastic. Once you have your hip measurement plus ease, if desired, plus seam allowance, measure how long you want the skirt and if you want a hem. Add that amount for the foldover. To get the pencil shape. you need to make the bottom smaller in circumference than the hip measurement. That means you gently curve your rectangles. If you go below the knees, you would need a vent in order to walk. Instead of a waistband, make a casing. Leave the back open and thread through 3/4 inch elastic cut a few inches larger than your waist. Then after making sure the elastic fits to size, cross one piece over the other and zigzag it. Then close the waistband seam. As far as sewing the seam, you can baste first with the longest straight stitch for fitting purposes. That way, you can take it apart if it is too large. The final seam is best at 1/4″ and done with a serger. If you don’t have that, try a straight stitch. If it is breaking, then try that stitch that looks like lightening. I cut the two rectangles at the same time, making the front and back the same size, and I don’t even make a hem if I don’t have enough fabric. I just serge finish the bottom. If you make a hem, just fold up, and either stitch on the machine or sew with a catch stitch by hand. Wash the fabric first if it is washable. If you want a pattern, CJ Basewear II is a good one for this type of skirt. I can make the same skirt with wovens. In that case, I just cut it wider, as there is no give or stretch. When you are threading your elastic, mark with a permanent sharpie, the two sides that are to match at the edges. Pin one end with a safety pin, pull the other end also with another safety pin or device. To secure the elastic stitch in the ditch of the side seams. If threads break from the straight stitch, just go back and resew, it won’t fall apart when you are wearing. I have been doing it for decades. You won’t be stretching it vertically for any reason. You don’t want to lay down a very small stitch as sometimes weight is lost and the skirt is remade. You will want the luxury of using your seam ripper to recut your skirt.
