what is the different between lockstitch and straight stitch on industrial sewing machines?
I’ve always owned a multiple of domestic sewing machines for all my general sewing uses. However, I now feel it is time to upgrade to add an industrial sewing machine to the collection.
Upon browsing the web, I’ve noted that some machines say straight stitch and some say lockstitch.
I’ve tried searching for a definate definition, however there does seem to be contrasting information.
According to Wikipedia, a locksitch is a normal sewing stitch just like that of the domestic machine where the top thread and the bobbin thread lock together when sewing. Although there also seems to be reference to the looped stitch, where there is no bobbin and the top thread is used to create a loop on the underside which another stitch is then passed through.
So are a lockstitch and a straight stitch the same thing, or is the lockstitch the one with the loop on the underside when we are talking about industrial sewing machines.

A lock-stitch is just that – the top thread and bobbin (lower thread) form a locked stitch.
A straight stitch is the same thing.
If a machine is described as a straight stitch this means that is all it can do – no zig-zag, just straight stitches.
The other description (loops) refers to a chain stitch and these pull right out (like the stitching across the top of a bag of bird seed or dog food, if they are not properly secured at the beginning and ending of the seam.
