Quilters: How do I use a “Flip n Set” Triangle Ruler?

I bought a pattern (Simplicity 3977), and it looked like a fairly easy task to sew (d), or the mantel scarf. It is asking to cut, using this tool, 4–4-1/2″x42″ strips, among others. I can read the 4-1/2″ strip on the ruler, but am terribly confused about the 42″. How do I do it, please? I just got the kit today, and was hopeful I could learn to quit on my own, using these tools that I heard were so “easy..

The 42″ is just 42 inches. Usually when you buy fabric, the width is about 48 inches (you should measure it to make sure!).

If I were you, I would just measure your fabric with a tape measure.

Your strips should look like really long rectangles, the long side 42 inches and the short side 4 1/2.
