Hand Sewing Quilt Binding

quick question about quilting?
I am new to the whole quilting thing and I am horrible at math.
I am making a quilt that measures our to 43″ by 43″ and I need to cut the backing for it but there are no instructions where to cut the back and how to sew it back together. I have 1 and a 1/2 yards and thats what the thing says it needed.
But where do I cut it?
and for hand binding do i sew one side by machine and then look it around and sew it to the other side by hand? im lost.
please help!!
Be generous with the batting and the backing.

You may not have enough for the back. The selvages have to be removed. If the fabric is 45″ wide, it will be reduced to 43″…that does not leave room for the quilting, which may reduce the size of the top.
Make the top, measure and then determine the amount of backing needed. The instruction may indicate a finished size, but that may not be what you end up with – and that is not unusual.
You would need 2 2/3 yards of fabric. Cut into two equal amounts – about 48″
Remove the selvages ( the long, uncut edges). Never use the selvage as it will shrink and cause puckering.
Sew the two lengths together, lengthwise. You now have a long tube.
Center the two seams so you have a long fold on each side of the long seams. Press and cut one of the folds. Open and press.
You now have a backing that is a panel the full width of the fabric in the center with seams on each side that balance the look of the back of the quilt.
Pin/baste the top, batting (cut larger than the top) and backing. Quilt as desired. Square the corners, and trim away the excess batting and backing.
Bind. Sew the binding with the sewing machine, turn to the back and hand stitch into place.
