learning how to embroider?
I am trying to learn how to embroider. I want to accomplish doing portraits with needle craft. I was wondering if any one happened to know of any good sites that that demonstrate embroidery pretty well. I’ve looked and haven’t found much of anything good yet. I’m not looking for cross stitching (because that’s all I happen to find) or nothing like that, more along the lines of something that can bring a lot of dimension to an embroidery, something where I can use thread to make it look as if the image I am embroidering is popping out at you….I’m having a hard time find sites that aren’t about cross stitching. I know something is out there because I have seen actual work like this. Anyway, I’m just wondering if anyone has any good tutorial sites that they just so happened to have had bookmarked.
Also, I want to hand-stitch, not use a machine! 
I used to have a fabulous book on Victorian embroidery. They often use a stitch called satin stitch where you do multiple long stitches in the same direction gradually changing the length as you go along to change the shape of the object. With good quality thread it’s really beautiful and shiny. Then you can go back over it to make it more 3 dimensional.
Perhaps google satin stitch or Victorian embroidery.
