I think it was definitely easier for middle-class women, who were not expected to go out to work, and if you were even moderately prosperous in those days you could afford to keep servants. Even in middle-class households children were often looked after by nannies, and boys would often be sent away to boarding school as soon as they were old enough. Sometimes girls too. middle-class wives could devote themselves to whatever their interests might be, social reform, art, literature, music, or just socialising.
Nowadays middle-class wives lead much more stressful lives, expected to be wage-earners, and do all the housework, cleaning, cooking etc as well. They live the way only very poor women lived a hundred years ago. On the other hand, the housework itself is less hard than it was a hundred years ago, working-class wives in those days did not have washing machines, dishwashers, or in many cases even indoor plumbing. they mostly didn’t have electric light or central heating. All these things have made houses warmer, cleaner, and more comfortable. So that even women who have to work as well as doing all the domestic work are not leading lives of such drudgery as they would a hundred years ago.
I would say it was definitely easier to be a mother if you were middle-class in those days, but harder if you were working-class.
