Brother Sewing Machine Case
Thread tangles as I sew?
I have a Brother sewing machine and it just started tangling up the bottom thread. It doesn’t tangle in the machine, just on my project. The top stitch looks good, but flip the material over and it’s a jumbled mess. It always happens when I start a seam but can occur in the middle of one too. I took the plate off around the bobbin case and cleaned it out. What else could I do to fix this? I have the manual but it doesn’t give a fix for this situation. Thanks.
This machine has the cartrige that threads the machine for you. You stick the spool in, wrap it around the cartrige–following the pictures, stick it in the machine and push down. It actually threads the needle for you then too. It’s been working fine through a quilt and 2 handbags. I’m almost done with a 3rd handbag and now it’s giving me grief. Maybe it needs cleaned? Oiled? Any tips there?
This is an easy one, most likely:
Take the spool of thread off the top of the machine.
Raise the presser foot — this opens the tension disks.
Rethread.
Sew.
When you get loops on the bottom of your sewing, the upper thread has too little tension — I’m betting you threaded with the presser foot down, which didn’t allow the thread into the tension disks (if you’ve been playing with the top tension, set it back to 4).
The other possibility is that there’s something stuck in the top tension — a bit of thread, a coating from sewing with hand quilting thread or the like. If so, cleaning the tension by flossing with a fold of clean cotton cloth (like a pillowcase edge) moistened with rubbing alcohol or unflavored vodka should fix it.
The caterpillar that you’re getting at the beginning of a seam is almost always due to not starting the seam correctly. Use the hand wheel to raise the bobbin thread. Pull off about 3″ of top and bobbin thread, and put them under the presser foot and then back behind the presser foot. Put the work under the presser foot, and using the hand wheel, drop the needle into
the work, then drop the presser foot. Hold the ends of the thread behind the foot, and use the handwheel to make 1-3 stitches (turn it in the correct direction!). Drop the threads and sew normally.
