Beginning Sewing With Children

What is the best way to teach a child to sew?
I have a 5 and 7 year old who are wanting to learn to sew, but I have no idea of the best way to begin with them. Any ideas?
When I was their age, my friends’ mothers and my mother had a “sewing circle.” We were included and that is how I learned to sew, so I think this is a wonderful idea (and skill) to teach!
First, can you sew? If not, you may need to get some reading and talk to other people to gain knowledge. You will probably learn alongside your children.
If you can…why not start with a simple project? Cross-stitching and the other one with the plastic, large-squared grids using yarn (what is that called?!) are easy beginner projects and usually cheap. Or you can work on a project together such as making a baby doll quilt. Simple stitching required to patch squares together and it is something you three can do collectively (and treasure once it is complete!)
You can always stop in a fabric/craft store and ask the staff for more ideas…I find they are always VERY helpful and knowledgable. Best of luck…sounds fun!
