Applique Embroidery Designs
How do need a embroidery machine for this?

I want an applique like in this picture. How do I get finished edges like it? I don’t have a serger or embroidery machine.. Is that what I need? Could I do it with a zigzag stitch?
I posted a few minutes ago about my onesie tearing, because this is what i’m trying to achieve.

Found your question about the onesies –
To avoid holes in knits, use a stretch/jersey sewing machine needle.
Practice on an old t-shirt. Try using a tear-away stabilizer under the garment to help stabilize the stitching.
If you were using an embroidery machine, you would need the stabilizer.
I would switch to Seam A Seam Lite instead of the heat & bond you where using.
You can use the zig-zag stitch only shorter – practice on the old shirt and when you like the result, note the stitch length and width setting.
For the two-dimensional embroidery you presented, start with the bottom piece. Lightly mark where the top piece will go and when you satin stitch, stop just slightly beyond the mark. Place the second piece and finsh the stitching.
