  • What are the various thread size systems?
  •                        There are several thread sizing systems which can be confusing

TEX SIZE: Is the method recommended by The American Textile Manufacturers Institute. It is a Direct Numbering System  and removes the "guesswork". Most major U.S. thread manufacturers have voluntarily complied with this system. Basically, it is the weight (iin grams) per 1000 meters' length of thread. The higher number, the heavier the thread. Sewing Thread Online utilizes the Tex system.

TICKET SIZE: This is a random numbering system that varies from manufacturer to manufacturer.

WEIGHT SIZE: This is a sizing system used primarily by non-U.S. manufacturers and is better suited for yarns. It is an Indirect system, the higher the number, the finer the thread.

  • What is mercerization and how does it improve the           thread?
  •       Mercerization is a process where a thread is first passed through a       gas flame or copper plates to remove protruding fibers from the       surface of the thread. This produces a smooth surface and reduces       linting. The cotton yarn is then immersed under tension in an alkali       solution which is later neturalized in acid. This process causes a       permanent swelling of the fiber which increases its luster and       enhances dye affinity.

If this process is not performed properly, it can actually weaken the       thread. Coats was the first company to produce a cotton sewing       thread almost 200 years ago and have perfected the process       producing the finest industrial cottons in the market today.

  • What are Prewound Bobbins and what are the       advantages?

  •       A bobbin is a thread supply for the bottom thread in machines.       There are a wide variety of types and sizes of prewound bobbins       which maximize yardage on the bobbins and are ready for the       operator to use. Bobbins may be made of filament polyester (V-15),       spun polyester, filament nylon, core threads or spun cotton.

Greater Yardage: Increased machine run time; fewer bobbins                                        changes; increased production

Precision Wind: Consistent thread delivery; neater seams, fewer                                     repairs

Broad Selection: Select from various thread constructions, fiber                                      sizes, colors and bobbin styles

Superior Quality: Resists overspinning; uniform tension and stitch                                        formation; less waste

Quick Bobbin Changes: No winding of thread is necessary

Eliminates Metal Bobbins: No expenditure on metal bobbins or                                                       unused thread to clean from metal                                                       bobbin case

  • What is the difference between Industrial quality versus          Consumer quality thread?
  •       Industrial sewing threads are used in high speed, automated       commercial equipment therefore, the quality level is engineered to       run fault-free at extremely high RPMs under the most demanding       and rigorous conditions. The quality control is more stringent as the       thread is used in high liability products such as Tire Cord,       Parachutes, Sutures, Automotive Airbags and Feminine Hygiene.       Industrial threads are "airspliced" which eliminates knots, have an       upgraded lubricant and are electronically "cleared" which       dramatically reduces the amount of slubs and faults in the thread.
